Curonian Spit Burial Traditions

Well, it seems I finally figured out why these traditional Lutheran grave markers typical to our Curonian Spit inhabitants used to be put at the foot of the grave rather than at the head. It was done so as to enable the deceased to have something to hold onto for support when rising on the Day of Judgement. "Practical" is the word. What do you say?
